The current opportunities

China’s healthcare market is the second largest in the world. The sector faces a wide range of challenges: ongoing urban and rural disparity; an ageing population and the rising burden of non-communicable diseases. These difficulties, in line with continued improvement of living standards and rising household disposable income, provide opportunities for UK companies seeking to grow their export business in the Chinese market.

The Chinese government is firmly committed to healthcare development and it remains a key part of the National Strategy, as demonstrated by the Healthy China 2030 planning outline which has an ever liberalising approach to market and regulatory access. This was well evidenced in 2017 for example, with 50% of China’s $52 billion medical device market accounted for by imports. The UK’s capabilities in healthcare-related goods and services provide an ideal match for China’s national healthcare objective.
