Why Japan?

Japan is currently the third largest economy in the world and in 2019, UK exports to Japan had increased 8.5% from the previous year. Japan is an advanced economy and a stable place for the UK to do business, with strong economic and political ties between the two countries cemented with the signing of a free trade agreement (CEPA) in September 2020. As both the world’s second largest healthcare and medical devices market, timing is optimal for UK healthcare and life science companies to consider exporting to Japan.

All Japanese citizens are covered by public medical insurance systems and with generally high levels of health consciousness, the demand for innovative healthcare solutions has never been higher. Japan is an aging society which has created challenges for the pre-existing healthcare system; consequently, the government continues to focus on a strategy centred around digital healthcare to relieve existing challenges.

These new technological developments are creating a more stable and accessible healthcare model; solutions in demand, but not limited to, include telehealth, wearable devices, mobile health, telemedicine, personalised medicine and information technology solutions.

In the South West, companies may not realise that they indeed either have an opportunity to export, or, expand their exports significantly in the Japanese market. Opportunities in the market exist particularly within digital health, but also within diagnostics, regenerative medicine, novel medical treatments, licensing and R&D collaboration. But it’s not the easiest market to navigate and it can take time and commitment. Join this event to explore your potential in the market and begin your export journey to Japan, with help and advice from our experts.
