What will I see?

Marine experts will give a demonstration showing the consequence of a cyber attack on a merchant vessel underway at sea. This will include a brief on the methods that can be used to capture a ship’s communication system and will show just how easy this can be.

This will be followed by two table top scenarios showing the consequence of a subsequent cyber attack.

This will then be followed by a briefing by Exeter and Plymouth Universities on the method to protect a merchant ship from the cyber attacks depicted in the scenarios.

A Q&A Session will end the three-hour event.

Who is this event for?

This event is designed for South West major ship executives, operators, both ashore and those who are sea-going will attend this event. It is also hoped that educators and staff from merchant navy training institutions can attend. Finally cyber security experts and those involved in cyber protection from the GCC Region are most welcome to attend.

Speakers

Sir Alan Massey KCB CBE: Chairman of the Event

Sir Alan Massey is currently non-executive Chair of the Trinity House Lighthouse Board; Chair of HeliOperations; Director of Shoreham Port Authority; trustee of the Marine Society and Sea Cadets; and trustee of the Confidential Human Factors Reporting Programme.

Before this, Sir Alan served for 33 wonderfully rewarding years in the Royal Navy, culminating in the role of Second Sea Lord as a Vice Admiral. En route, he commanded four major warships, including the aircraft carriers ILLUSTRIOUS and ARK ROYAL; served on four occasions in the Ministry of Defence; twice on NATO strategic Headquarter staffs; and once in the UK's Permanent Joint Headquarters as its one-star Director of Operations.

In 2010 Alan moved into the senior civil service as Chief Executive of the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency, overseeing a complete overhaul of HM Coastguard, the renewal and re-configuration of the UK's 22-helicopter search and rescue capability, the modernisation of the UK Ship Register and the reshaping of the MCA's maritime regulatory functions.

Ian McLaren MBE: DIT SW Sponsor of the Event & Director of the Table Top Demonstration

Currently Ian is the Marine Sector Specialist at the Department for International Trade, South West of the United Kingdom (DIT SW). In the past, Ian has had a wealth of experience in the Gulf Region reaching back to the early 1980’s when he commanded a Gunship for the Sultan of Oman patrolling the Strait of Hormuz, then in the first Gulf War where Ian was highly instrumental in the successful engagement of the Silkworm Missile fired at the battleship USS MISSOURI by HMS GLOUCESTER.

Much more recently Ian has been involved in the following Arabian Gulf maritime orientated projects, in North to South order:

The Upgrade of the Offshore Security Facilities for Saudi Aramco, KSA
The Upgrade of the Vessel Traffic system for Ras Laffan, Qatar

Finally, Ian has run many Table Top Demonstrations on behalf of the British Government’s Cabinet Office, which have included the Prime Minister as participants, and also important International Straits such as the Bosporus for the Turkish Government.

Helen Shannon: Director of the Onboard Demonstration & OCTO Representative

Helen is a professional engineer with 35 years’ experience in major hazard risk and resilience. She is a director of Octo, a consultancy which specialises in preparing organisations to deal with crises and emergencies, and to develop standards of resilience proportionate to the risks they face. Her focus in risk management is in working with boards and senior executives to ensure that risks are effectively managed throughout their organisations.

She has worked extensively in the Gulf region: for the Secretary General of the Co-operation Council of the Arab States of the Gulf in facilitating risk management across all civil responding agencies in the region; for the Government of Bahrain in developing crisis and emergency management arrangements in the Ministries of Interior and Foreign Affairs; and in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in support of private company crisis and emergency arrangements. She has an extensive blue-chip client base and is currently undertaking similar services for the European Commission and Council of Europe.

Helen’s early career was as a plant manager in the chemicals multi-national ICI and as a regulator in the UK Offshore Industry.

Daniel Ng: CyberOwl Representative

Dan is CEO of CyberOwl, a disruptive startup helping asset operators gain visibility of the cyber risks to their distributed, remote assets, particularly in the maritime sector. Before building CyberOwl he was Associate Director at KPMG, where he focused on the Defence, Security and Industrial sectors, working extensively to develop propositions and commercial strategies for global security, defence, technology and engineering companies such as Northrop Grumman, BAE Systems, Atos and BP. Dan was also Chair of a Working Group at the IoT Security Foundation, Council Member of the Digital Technology Group of the UK Society for Maritime Industries and Steering Committee Member for the Operational Technology Cyber Security Alliance.

Lee Hibbert: Bamboo Technology Representative

Lee has 35 years’ experience in Risk Management, serving in both the UK Military, Law enforcement and UK Government. Working previously as an Operational Commander in the Technical Collections department at the National Crime Squad and Serious and Organised Crime Agency, Lee has a Post Grad Diploma in Business Continuity, Cyber Security and Emergency Management and a MSc in Organisational Resilience. He is a qualified teacher and visiting Lecturer at a number of UK and International Universities.

He has worked with companies in the UK and the GGC region. Working across different projects Lee has designed and delivered digital assurance in Bahrain, Kuwait, Libya, UAE, Iraq, South Sudan, Tanzania and Zambia.

Working as the Cyber lead at Bamboo Technology Group, the team are creating audacious digital assurance solutions to defeat cyber criminals, while meeting compliance and delivering long-term cyber resilience.

The team work to deliver Red and Blue team cyber security capability to businesses, with an in-house Cyber Threat Intelligence unit (CTI) and Incident Response Team (CIRT), all delivering high levels of service from the Security Operations Centre (SOC) situated in offices near Cyber Central, the UK’s focal point of activity in cyber security, adjacent to GCHQ.

Bamboo is certified to ISO 9001 and 27001 BSI standards. They are a NCSC approved Cyber Essentials (CE), CE Plus and IASME Gold certification body.

Kevin Forshaw: Cyber SHIP Lab Representative

Kevin Forshaw is Director of Industrial and Strategic Partnerships at the University of Plymouth’s Faculty of Science and Engineering. He has been instrumental in securing funding and industry support for the new, £3.2m University of Plymouth Cyber-SHIP Lab.

The Lab is a hardware-based, configurable research platform to enhance understanding of maritime systems’ cyber vulnerabilities, and to deliver vital cyber resilience tools and training. It is a springboard for development of resources to empower the maritime sector to achieve cyber resilience on a par with best-prepared technology and financial organisations.

Paul Febvre: SA Catapult Representative

Paul is Chief Technology Officer at the Satellite Applications Catapult, responsible for establishing a future vision for the sector and directing the technology strategy for the Catapult. Paul leads a small team of solutions architects and technologists that work across the Catapult to provide industry support in the creation and realisation of technologically innovative solutions to real world challenges.

Prior to joining the Catapult, Paul was Design Authority for the Inmarsat BGAN system and responsible for managing Inmarsat’s activities under the European Space Agency (ESA) ARTES (Advanced Research Telecommunications Systems) programme. This included the Alphasat-Extension programme to integrate advanced technologies into the Inmarsat systems, and the Iris programme under SESAR (Single European Skies Advanced Research) joint undertaking to develop the next generation of aviation safety services for air traffic management communications systems over Europe.

Paul previously worked for many years at BT Research Laboratories in Ipswich, developing mobile and satellite radio communications systems, advanced modulation and coding, data transmission protocols, and information security architectures.

Cyber security experts are BSI approved consultants and fully licensed members of the Association of British Investigators. Their qualifications range from, Masters in Organisational Resilience, Lead Auditors in ISO 27001, 22301 and 31000, internationally accredited CREST Certified Infrastructure Tester (CCT INF), Offensive Security Certified Professional (OSCP) and Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). All have either served in the British Military and/or the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) with over 35 years’ experience in cyber security and proactive investigations. In the last 12 months, all have been Cabinet office and UK Governments advisors in Cyber Security, Enterprise Risk Management and Business Continuity planning. With over 30 years’ experience in protecting UK critical infrastructure, including the maritime and aviation sectors.
