UK Big data pioneers brings world-leading expertise to Asia

Country: Hong Kong / China

A UK company that is pioneering big data analytics in the healthcare sector is set to open its first offices in mainland China after securing contracts to introduce British and other technology into the country.

Nine Health Global specialises in bringing clinical and technical expertise together to produce artificial intelligence (AI) and supercomputer modelling solutions for the healthcare sector. This combination of the two skill areas makes the business a leader in the field of creating practical applications from large volumes of health-related data.

Another example of how the UK brings innovation to life

For the past few years Nine Health Global has been establishing itself in Asia by collaborating with its Chinese business partner, Hangzhou Lantone Information Technology, to develop a suite of automatic diagnostic tools called ‘Diagbot’.

Diagbot is used by clinicians for the early detection of most common conditions such as diabetes and respiratory disease in over 2,500 Chinese clinics. Diagbot is unique in the market as it uses big data and neural network technology, recommends the best diagnosis and treatment recommendations for clinicians in real time, and automatically quotes the latest national clinical guidelines before giving a diagnosis. All decisions are related to the patient's existing electronic medical records. Lantone has accumulated knowledge graph of more than one hundred diseases and is able to accurately diagnose nearly a thousand common diseases, and provide related treatment.

Victor Xu, general manager at Lantone, said: “Working with Nine Health Global has helped us create tools that are leading the way in the primary healthcare market in China, a relatively new practice area in the country.

“In Asia, finding a partner with both technical and clinical expertise in the field of healthcare AI is rare, which is why it took us years to find a partner such as Nine Health.”

The business was introduced to Lantone by the UK Department for International Trade (DIT) on a trade mission to China in 2014. Since then, the business has been fully supported by DIT in China and Hong Kong, introducing Nine Health Global to new business contacts and opportunities.

Most recently, Nine Health has signed contracts with Cambridge Sound Technologies to market the Sleep Infuser in China. The Sleep Infuser is a device that uses sophisticated sound technology to induce healthy sleep patterns in those who have trouble sleeping.

As well as establishing a subsidiary in Hong Kong, Nine Health Global also has plans to set up a permanent base on Guangzhou’s Bio-Island. The company has also signed a memorandum of understanding with Tsingdata D-Lab to develop big data analytics and related services and technology in relation to healthcare in the PRC and the UK. Tsingdata D-lab is a pioneering big data company which is based at Tsinghua University.

Nine Health CEO, Elaine Taylor-Whilde, was a trained physiotherapist in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) before she completed a master’s degree in information technology, economics and finance. After a period as the National Clinical Lead for Research for Informatics at the Health and Social Care Information Centre (now NHS Digital). Elaine founded Nine Health in 2011 with a team of clinical and technical colleagues to take forward her aspirations to develop big data analytics tools in healthcare.

Elaine said: “We chose to expand into China and Hong Kong because of the tremendous growth opportunity it presents. Along with our diagnostic tool work, we’ve also been helping to develop software for wearable tech and smart consumer electronics.”.

“DIT has been instrumental in our success in Asia. Without them we wouldn’t have met our business partner, Lantone, or landed our most recent contracts, which it informed us were up for tender. Its contacts have been invaluable, and we will absolutely continue to work with DIT as we grow.”
