About the mission

It is our pleasure to invite you to participate in our forthcoming Fintech Trade Mission to Egypt, organised in partnership with the Department for International Trade (DIT), the British-Egyptian Business Association (BEBA), and Egyptian British Business Council (EBBC).

With over 100 million people there’s a huge pool for innovation in Egypt. Egypt’s emerging fintech sector is especially interesting, providing solutions for billing, payments, lending, and more.

In a predominantly cash-based society, the Egyptian government and Central Bank of Egypt realize the importance of progressing towards a cashless economy and are actively supporting fintech start-ups to help make that move. In 2016, the Central Bank of Egypt issued new regulations for cashless payments using smartphones, which enables customers to transfer money and pay bills. In addition, a National Payment Council was established in 2017 to encourage the move to cashless payments. Fintech companies are able to partner with licensed banks to provide the technology framework that supports Egypt’s progression towards a cashless economy.

Egypt has local fintech accelerators such as 1864, by Barclays bank and Flat6Labs as well as AUC’s venture lab fintech accelerator, built in collaboration with Commercial International Bank. Earlier in 2018, Nile University launched Egypt’s first blockchain focused incubator at NU Tech Space. See our fintech brief for further information.

Our 3-day programme includes meetings with regulators and policy makers, financial institutions, incubators, and startups. Join us and explore the considerable opportunities for UK business in Egypt’s financial sector.
