Optimisation of vehicle fleets

We have developed the ConOP product that enables a wider, systems of systems approach where we optimise transport fleets at campus locations using a wide range of input parameters. We have taken this approach as we understand that high traffic  destinations have a wide range of priorities that need consideration, whether it be energy use, costs, labour or customer satisfaction. For each client site we can vary  preferences according to customer needs using a heuristic, multiobjective  optimisation algorithm.

For instance, at a budget airport we may prioritise cost and labour, whereas at a large Hub airport we might prioritise added value services and passenger services. Each scenario can model priorities for different parameters so client sites can determine whether there is a most effective solution for their needs or consider the impact of  different trade-offs. This algorithm is based on one that is successfully used in the airline industry to optimise aircraft movements and is the first time that it has been applied for surface transport.

The UK's largest electric vehicle commercial fleet

Problem: How do you charge 64 EV’s quickly at the same time with a limited power supply, cost effectively? Solution: EO’s award-winning eoHUB can connect up to 32 dumb charging stations, making the system super cost-effective and scalable; ideal
for large EV fleets. In order to save the client money ongoing, we developed some intelligent features:

Active Load Management - The eoHUB monitors the buildings power supply and regulates the power on the charging stations in line with the available power supply at the building.

AI Fleet Telematics Integration - EO integrated our eoCloud platform with vehicle telematics systems to provide fleet managers with the markets first turnkey EV fleet software management platform. EO is able to understand the state-ofcharge
of the vehicles battery and charges the EV’s at times when energy is at it’s cheapest.

Project Alloyed - An end to end Platform for CAV

Epitomical led Project Alloyed which set out to play a role in the build up of one of the four key areas identified in the UK’s Industrial Strategy , the Future of Mobility. The project has taken a usecase driven approach to identify and prioritise areas of research and development together with 17 partners within the project consortium. The key technical objectives of the project were to study and where possible develop prototype systems which:
1. Allow vehicles and infrastructure to connect seamlessly independent of technology or location
2. Tightly integrates to existing and future in-vehicles technologies
3. Enable a services layer allowing the creation of both open and secure services

Executed over 15 months from August, 2017 this project is an initial foray towards delivering a broader vision. A number of work packages were identified to deliver project objectives with each work package assigned a leader supported by one or more project partners. The project culminates with a number of demonstrations of the systems and concepts developed over the course of the project.

Latent Logic

Latent Logic

Latent Logic is a spin-out from the University of Oxford. We enable the safe, scalable, virtual testing of autonomous vehicles. Understanding the behaviour of other road users is the biggest challenge for a self-driving car, and can only be tested safely in simulation, not on real roads. We use state-of-the-art deep learning to build “virtual humans” for these simulated test environments. What’s unique about our technology is the realism of our virtual drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. We capture the subtleties and variety of human behaviour, like safe or aggressive driving, through applying Computer Vision and Imitation Learning to traffic videos.

Lightfoot and Virgin Media - pioneering technology delivers big savings

As one of the UK and Ireland’s largest broadband, TV, mobile and home phone  providers, Virgin Media have an extraordinarily busy vehicle fleet. Not willing to accept
their carbon footprint as a given, Virgin Media turned to Lightfoot to reduce the impact of their fleet and improve driver safety. For Dave Hodsdon, Head of Claims and Insurance, the benefits of the technology stretch beyond its sustainability credentials:
“Since rollout there has been a real improvement in driving techniques. We took Lightfoot on to help us ensure that every driver comes home safe and if we can make that journey more efficient as well, then that’s a great win-win”.

Since launch, Lightfoot has been rolled out to nearly 95% of the Virgin Media fleet and the benefits have been significant, Rob McCann, Sustainable Growth Manager at Virgin Media explains; “With Lightfoot, it’s expected the business will save a million litres of
fuel each year through improved driving efficiency – equating to approximately 2,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions, enough to fill 52 Sydney Opera Houses.”

Potenza Technology

DfIT_186_AW (2)

An innovative powerline automotive body system: Potenza Technology

Potenza Technology led the LEAP 2 project, part funded by the Advanced Propulsion Centre, UK, with the aim to develop a lightweight, intelligent Body System Network with the potential to replace traditional vehicle electrics. This unique development
uses Ethernet over Power Line communications between distributed modules placed around the vehicle over just one wire. Not only does this simplify the vehicle wiring process, but also reduces the loom weight by >80%, simplifies routing and assembly (all connections can be common, each device understands its function), and provides the facility to increase functionality through fully independent control of all outputs.
For Ariel Cars, the system was applied to 2 of their products, the skeletal Atom and Nomad, with a bespoke dash and switchgear unit replacing a discrete display and switches. The key criteria for Ariel was mass reduction, but cost effectiveness also had to be met, with a full manufacturing cost (inc. assembly and test time) demonstrating the ability to provide savings to the incumbent system when fully integrated with the
vehicle as a manufactured item.

The Floow

DfIT_186_AW (2)

Liberty South Africa in partnership with The Floow

The Floow’s scoring expertise is central to the proposition aimed at young professionals in South Africa. Customers can quickly receive a quote by communicating with the Liberty Short-Term Insurance chatbot, available via social media messaging channels and their app and website.

Drivers then have the opportunity to prove they are a safe driver by passing an initial  ‘driver test’ over 300km through the app, measured by a set of robust driver scores  including driver distraction. Drivers also receive regular feedback from the chatbot to help and encourage them to pass the test. Once a driver achieves the target driving scores, they will not only benefit from a competitively priced premium, but will continue to receive useful feedback from the chatbot, as well as the opportunity to earn Uber vouchers for continued safe driving

what3words

Mercades-Benz became the first automaker to launch what3words in vehicles

A recent JD Power survey found that car navigation systems being difficult to use and inaccurate is one of the most frequently reported problems, along with voice recognition issues. The automotive industry has struggled to improve these features, because the world’s street addressing systems are incompatible with modern navigation needs, especially voice input.

Addresses were not built for voice input. 240 California Street and to 40 California Street are hard for a voice system to distinguish between, and many road names aren’t unique. There are 14 different Church Roads in London, 632 Juarez Streets in Mexico City and 71 Peachtree Streets in Atlanta. Every 3 word address is unique and the AutoSuggest feature helps correct mistakes, making sure drivers reach the correct destination, every time. what3words enables Mercedes-Benz drivers to input 3 words to reach any 10ftx 10ft location. This allows drivers to input not just a building, but a precise entrance or parking spot, for a truly seamless experience.
