“UK government support has enabled work with potentially disruptive technologies at highrisk, to a near-production solution. Post-production support, (trade links and shows) demonstrates a clear understanding of small business needs in getting innovative products like the LEAP system to
market.”

Dr Paul Faithfull, Managing Director, Potenza Technology

An innovative powerline automotive body system: Potenza Technology

Potenza Technology led the LEAP 2 project, part funded by the Advanced Propulsion Centre, UK, with the aim to develop a lightweight, intelligent Body System Network with the potential to replace traditional vehicle electrics. This unique development
uses Ethernet over Power Line communications between distributed modules placed around the vehicle over just one wire. Not only does this simplify the vehicle wiring process, but also reduces the loom weight by >80%, simplifies routing and assembly (all connections can be common, each device understands its function), and provides the facility to increase functionality through fully independent control of all outputs.
For Ariel Cars, the system was applied to 2 of their products, the skeletal Atom and Nomad, with a bespoke dash and switchgear unit replacing a discrete display and switches. The key criteria for Ariel was mass reduction, but cost effectiveness also had to be met, with a full manufacturing cost (inc. assembly and test time) demonstrating the ability to provide savings to the incumbent system when fully integrated with the
vehicle as a manufactured item.
