Speakers

Annie Coppel
Associate Director - Field team (North) and Health Sector lead

Annie is passionate about improving health and care quality. She has worked for NICE since 2006, first establishing a programme to support commissioning for high quality care, and then as a member of the externally-facing Field Team. In her current role, she is responsible for a programme of strategic engagement across the North of England and for helping NICE to keep up to date with the health care landscape and policy initiatives.

With a background of implementation science, she offers challenge and support to health and care organisations on the use of NICE guidance and related products to improve care quality and outcomes. Her career as a pharmacist has seen her work clinically in the hospital sector, be responsible for general practice quality and prescribing as a health authority prescribing adviser, and as a Director in the National Prescribing Centre providing support to primary care prescribing quality initiatives.

 

 

   

Brad Groves
Associate Director
NICE

Brad joined NICE’s Commercial and Managed Access Programme in June 2019, after working at NHS England on the Cancer Drugs Fund (a managed access partnership between NICE and NHS England). With over 12 years’ experience in healthcare in Australia, Scotland and England, Brad is an experience leader of national and international data and analytical partnerships focused on real-world applications of new evidence. As NICE’s Associate Director for Managed Access, Brad’s ambition is to ensure that patients can access promising new treatments while further data is collected to reduce uncertainties about their clinical and cost effectiveness.

 

 

   

Catherine Kural
Project Coordinator, NICE International & NICE Scientific Advice
NICE

Catherine is responsible for providing administrative support to the project managers and technical members of the team.

Before joining NICE, Catherine held various administrative roles within the NHS. Most recently, she was a senior administrator for NHS Cheshire CCG where she provided project support to the continuing healthcare department.

Catherine holds a BSc Honours degree in Languages from the University of Manchester.

 

 

Chris Connell
Associate Director - Field Team, Health and Social Care Directorate
NICE

Chris Connell is Associate Director with the NICE Field Team covering the south of England and Wales. His responsibilities include; helping organisations and teams make best use of NICE guidance in health and social care; ensuring that they are kept up to date on latest developments and making sure that the views of users are fed back and reflected in the work of the Institute.

Before joining NICE, Chris was General Manager for Medicine and A&E at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals in the English Midlands. Chris has 19 years’ experience of operational management within the National Health Service (NHS), covering most acute specialties as well as mental health. He has previously worked for the NHS in Gloucester, Norwich, Birmingham and Walsall.

Chris holds a master’s degree in public services management from Aston Business School in Birmingham, England and a postgraduate diploma in health services management.

 

 

David Thomson
Associate Director
NICE

David joined NICE in December 2018 as Associate Director for its new Commercial Liaison Team (CLT). David and his team provide an interface between NICE guidance production and the NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSE&I) Commercial Directorates to ensure that: the value judgements made by NICE committees in the development of guidance are effectively translated and incorporated into those used in related commercial engagements led by NHSE&I; NHSE&I are supported in understanding the impact of these judgements on the commercial arrangements they are developing with manufacturers; and there is alignment between NHSE&I and NICE guidance production processes that supports timely access for patients to cost-effective and affordable technologies. CLT is also the lead team at NICE responsible for the Budget Impact Test.

He qualified as a pharmacist from Strathclyde University in the last millennium and spent his formative years as a cancer pharmacist in acute Trusts, culminating in his appointment as Lead Pharmacist for the Yorkshire Cancer Network, working across 7 acute Trusts and 12 Primary Care Trusts. In this role he worked closely with the National Cancer Action Team (NCAT) resulting in a part-time secondment to a national role with them in support of their work in managing the regionally administered Cancer Drugs Fund. In 2013, David became Lead Cancer Pharmacist at the newly formed NHS Commissioning Board (now NHSE&I) and in this role supported the work of nationally administered Cancer Drugs Fund and of the Chemotherapy Clinical Reference Group.

David has developed a strong interest in the pricing and reimbursement of medicines, which led him to successfully complete an MSc in International Health Technology Appraisal, Pricing and Reimbursement from the School of Health and Related Research (SCHARR) at the University of Sheffield in 2014. He is a Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and of the British Oncology Pharmacy Association (BOPA) and is a past Chair of BOPA.

 

 

Deborah Lee
Senior Project Manager, NICE International & NICE Scientific Advice
NICE

Deborah is the senior project manager in the scientific advice team and for NICE International. She leads on the management of knowledge transfer and consultancy activities.

Deborah is the primary contact for national and international organisations interested in engaging with NICE, learning more about our processes, methodology and support services. She works closely with stakeholders and business partners to publicise our offering and develop new services and initiatives at a national and international level. She led on the development of the award winning META Tool and continues to support its ongoing development, alongside supporting the management of a variety of services within scientific advice.

Previously, Deborah worked in various NHS public health roles, leading on a number of public health research, audit and service development projects. She has an honours degree in psychology, a Postgraduate Diploma in Psychological Research methods and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Public Health.

 

 

Hugh McGuire
Senior Scientific Advisor, NICE International
NICE

Hugh is a senior scientific adviser within the NICE International and NICE scientific advice team. He leads technically on the NICE International services, with specialist knowledge of guideline development.

Hugh contributes to NICE International's strategic objectives and the delivery of different international engagements. He does this through workshops, educational seminars, and international consultancy projects. He has extensive experience in delivering these services at both a national and international level.

Hugh holds an MSc in Health Psychology from the University of Westminster. Before joining NICE, he worked in various roles in guideline development and for Cochrane.

 

 

 

Ian Watson 
Senior Technical Advisor for Methods
NICE

Ian, alongside Lorna Dunning, is responsible for leading the ongoing review of health technology evaluation methods at NICE. As we enter the final phase of the methods review, they are now responsible for delivering and implementing the finalised methods into health technology evaluation practice.

Working with the NICE health technology evaluation teams, Ian oversaw the design and delivery of methods research projects that underpinned proposed updates to the methods, and led their development from proposals to draft methods.

Ian has worked at NICE since 2013, working in guidance development in the Technology Appraisals and Highly Specialised Technologies teams before joining the methods review. Prior to joining NICE, he worked in medical communications. He holds a degree in Natural Sciences from Cambridge and a post-graduate diploma in public health from the University of London.

 

 

Lorna Dunning 
Senior Technical Advisor for Methods
NICE

Mira Patel 
Assistant Project Manager, NICE International & NICE Scientific Advice
NICE

Mira is responsible for planning and coordinating the delivery of scientific advice projects. She plays a key role in liaising with external clients and stakeholders and is also involved with the management and development of the META Tool.

Mira holds a BSc honours degree in Business Management from Aston University. After spending over 2 years in the print management industry as an Account Manager, Mira moved to Australia where she took up post with the Medical Council of New South Wales. On her return to the UK, Mira joined the Technology Appraisals team at NICE, where she coordinated large scale committee meetings.

 

 

Pilar Pinilla Dominguez
Associate Director, NICE International
NICE

Pilar is responsible for the strategic objectives and direction of the NICE International services. She oversees all the international services provided by the team and contributes to the delivery of different international engagements through workshops, educational seminars and international consultancy projects. She has extensive experience in delivering these services at a national and international scale and represents us in a series of NHS International groups.

Pilar also works in scientific advice projects in the scientific advice team, where she contributes to the standard service providing advice on behalf of NICE. She also collaborates in parallel scientific advice with other Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and regulatory agencies. She joined NICE in 2012 and worked in the Technology Appraisals and the Highly Specialised Technologies programme until 2016, when she became part of the scientific advice team.

Pilar holds a University degree in Business Administration and Management from University of La Laguna (Spain), and an MSc in Health Economics, Policy and Law with specialisation in Health Economics from the Erasmus University of Rotterdam (The Netherlands). Before joining NICE, Pilar worked as a researcher in one of the Spanish regional HTA units (SESCS, Canary Islands) conducting systematic reviews and economic evaluations for the Spanish Healthcare System. She is currently on the board of directors for the Spanish Health Economics Association (AES).

 

 

Sarah Boyce
Senior Technical Analyst, Centre for Guidelines
NICE

Sarah is a Senior Technical Analyst in the COVID-19 guidelines team. She has worked on the development of COVID-19 rapid guidelines such as ‘Managing acute COVID-19’ and ‘Managing the long-term effects of COVID-19’. She has also been involved in rapid guideline updates using a living approach to guideline development. This involves balancing the rigour needed in guideline development against the need for rapid guidance in an ever-changing context. Sarah has previously worked on some Public Health guidelines at NICE.

Prior to joining NICE, Sarah worked as an evidence reviewer at BMJ for their evidence-based point of care products. Sarah holds an MSc in Molecular Medicine from the University of Essex.

 

 

Shreya Shukla
Senior Technical Analyst, Guideline Updates, Centre for Guidelines
NICE

Shreya is a Senior Technical Analyst within the Guideline Updates team. Shreya leads technically on the development of NICE guidelines and has previously worked a range of clinical guidelines including the diabetes guidelines and the guideline on cannabis-based medicinal products. Shreya holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) from King’s College London.
