About the campaign

This high-value and in-depth series of events has been designed to give Midlands Engine companies a unique opportunity to access market insight and in-market buyers from key retail, wholesale and distribution businesses in Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia.

What to expect?

  • Introduction to Emart (26th January 2021): Following on from the introductory webinar that took place in December, we have now arranged a Buyer Introduction with Emart - Mongolia’s largest supermarket chain at 8-9:30am on the 26th of January 2021. You will have the opportunity to learn about Emart, their product requirements and market trends, and take part in a Q&A.
  • British Food Festival and Tasting Event: Unfortunately, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a decision has been reached to postpone the 1st British Food Festival indefinitely. Instead, we will be preparing the British Food Hampers with your samples in it; to be delivered to the key buyers in the market. We are planning to deliver the hampers early Feb which will be a good timing just before Lunar New Year period here in Mongolia. The ultimate goal of getting your products in the hands of buyers who will be taking part in Meet The Buyer activity in the coming months will still be achieved.

Saruul of DIT Mongolia will make sure taking pictures of the hampers when the customer receives them and will share it with you in due course. In case there are samples left, we will take good care of them and keep them safely at the Embassy for use/promote at future Embassy events until the product expiry dates, along with literature and media submitted.

  • Virtual Meet the Buyer: This will be followed by 1:1 Virtual Meet the Buyer meetings in early 2021 to progress your introduction into a tangible business connection, with the view to offer further activity to support Midlands companies thereafter. The nature of this activity is to be determined in early 2021 once we have a clear picture of travel and activity limitations

Market Insight

Mongolia is a sovereign nation, nestled in between Russia and China and has a fast-growing economy, thanks largely to the exportation of mined products, and had GDP growth of 6.5% in 2019 and inflation of 7.3%. It is thought to be one of the world’s fastest growing economies currently, with further success forecasted due to a developing mining industry and high levels of foreign investment.

Mongolia has a population of 3.3 million people, with 1.5 million residing in the capital, Ulaanbaatar. This urban population includes a growing middle class and a young, highly educated population who have benefited from English language taught being in schools.

Imported food and drink products account for 30-50% of products in supermarkets and hypermarkets, and therefore Mongolian clients have a good appetite for a wide range of imported products from around the world. European and American products are thought to be of higher quality than products imported from China, one of their key international trade partners, and thus are favourable to buyers.

Key retail partners (including supermarkets, hyper markets and convenience stores) in the region include:

  • Bosa Impex (Bosa Mart) – 7 supermarkets
  • CU – 50 convenience stores
  • Efes International – 5 retail stores, 1 wholesale store
  • Emart – 3 hypermarkets
  • Nomin Holdings – 3 department stores, 13 wholesale stores, 9 hypermarkets, 14 supermarkets, 11 convenience stores
  • Orgil – 8 supermarkets, 2 wholesale stores
  • Sansar- 13 supermarkets, 1 wholesale store

Eligibility and Market Demands

This opportunity is open to all Midlands Food and Drink companies, however special interest has been expressed in the following products:

  • Packaged snacks and confectionery
  • Premium products
  • Cupboard staples
  • Frozen meals and ingredients
  • Baby foods and formula
  • Health foods, free from, organic and sports nutrition products

  • Soft drinks including water
  • Hot drinks
  • Spirits
  • Beers and ciders
  • Wines

The only limiting factor is that logistics to Mongolia can be quite slow, and we cannot offer specialist temperature-controlled transportation of samples to the British Food Festival, this would not affect your eligibility to participate in other events in this campaign.

Please do contact emma.clayton@mobile.trade.gov.uk to discuss alternative promotion options if this would impact your participation in the event.
