Investing Into Cities Forum

The Investing into Cities virtual event replaced the long-anticipated 'Investing into Cities Breakfast Forum' at 10 Downing Street. The session saw presentations from three of the UK’s leading cities where they profiled prime investment propositions as well as discussing practical information around rationale and ease of investment into the UK.

This session came following the Prime Minister’s commitment to prioritise levelling up the nations and regions of the UK, safeguarding livelihoods and delivering prosperity, particularly as the UK deals with the economic impact of Covid-19.

Attendees heard from the Minister for Investment and the Prime Minister’s Chief Strategic Adviser who provided insight into the UK’s investment strategy and commitment to supporting international investors in the years to come.

See below for a recording of the session.

Belfast

Belfast is a city of exceptional possibilities which has seen an impressive trajectory of development across sectors ranging from hotels, office accommodation, cultural venues and visitor experiences, education space and student and residential accommodation.

With an extensive track-record in real estate development, Belfast has seen over 2.5 million sq ft of office accommodation completed or under construction; 5,000 purpose-built student accommodation beds have been completed or under construction; and to support the growing tourism market, 1,500 hotel beds have been completed. Additionally, over 40 acres of major mixed-use regeneration schemes currently in progress, including Weavers Cross (a major transport-led regeneration project) and significant waterfront developments.

As a leading council, we offer a broad range of support for businesses or people, expanding their operations in Belfast or considering our city as an investment destination. We proactively work with investors, providing professional and personal connections to help them do business in our city.

Liverpool

The Liverpool City Region is far bigger than just the city of Liverpool. It encompasses the surrounding boroughs of Halton, Knowsley, Sefton, St Helens and the Wirral, covering six council areas with a population of 1.6 million.

Led by Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram, the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority aims to create an environment which will allow our economy to thrive for the good of everyone who lives and works in Liverpool City Region. We work together to make investments in areas that have a real impact on our communities, such as transport, employment, culture, digital and housing. By using the devolved powers we have, we can make a real and meaningful difference to the lives of the people living and working in the area.

We have already seen the benefits that our work has produced, having invested in schemes to create jobs and apprenticeships, make it easier to travel in and around the city region, renovate and improve schools and colleges, help long-term unemployed families back into work and support cultural events, such as the return of the giants.

With the simple aim of becoming a truly global city region, this means we can make the Liverpool City Region the best possible place to live, work, play and grow old. But we are not just thinking long term. We are delivering real benefits for real people, right now.
