About the Speaker
Doug joined the Board of Trade in 1969 and qualified as a Documents Clerk with London Chamber of Commerce. He spent the early years of his career advising companies on overseas tariffs, duties, taxes, licences, none tariff barriers and documentation requirements. He was part of the team that developed and delivered the first ever electronic export advice service for companies, the Export Intelligence Service ( EIS). Later he worked as a trade negotiator for DTI and in Brussels working with the EU on the development and delivery of Directives affecting business and this was followed by postings in the Commercial Sections of British Embassies in Europe and the Far East promoting British Exports. He returned to DTI to work on major overseas projects and the associated export finance packages including two secondments to the private sector to work on Export Credits and the project management of major power projects. This was followed by a move to the West Midlands where Doug headed teams working on Inward Investment Promotion, Ministerial and VIP visits and briefing and economic reporting before returning to export promotion work. On the formation of UKTI he was appointed Regional Director for the West Midlands and in 2011 was awarded an OBE for services to international business. Before his retirement from the Civil service in 2013 Doug’s final job was acting as UKTI national Director for all the English Regions. After retirement Doug worked as a consultant on international trade and he worked closely with UKTINW on establishing a programme of international trade events and international buyers visits for the International Festival of Business in 2014/16/18. He has worked on promoting Queens Awards since their inception and more recently has worked as part of a team of consultants supporting the Queens Award Office in the QA delivery process.
