Background:

The UK’s Department for Business & Trade has already undertaken a number of female-founder initiatives as a result of several research papers identifying a gender gap for female founders and led- businesses, including the Alison Rose Report and the UK’s Investing in Women Code (IWC)

According to the 2019 The UK VC & Female Founders report, for every £1 of venture capital (VC) investment in the UK, all-female founder teams get less than 1p. By comparison, all-male founder teams get 89p and mixed-gender teams get the remaining 10p. In addition to the disproportionate VC funding, knowledge and access have also been identified as challenges.

This masterclass is part of a larger Digital Exporting Programme that has been designed to help further female founder capabilities and knowledge building. The masterclass has been created to empower female digital entrepreneurs to help them overcome barriers faced when growing a global digital business, to share insight and recommendations for tools and strategy to realise their ambitions.

It is estimated that by 2050 over half of all trade will be digital. The UK Department of Business and Trade Digital Exporting Programme continues to support global growth in the Digital Economy with the aim to enable more women entrepreneurs to take advantage and help to break down barriers that mean they are well placed to fully harness digital opportunities of the future.

Our ‘Planning for Global Growth in the Digital Economy’ is the third activity in a programme we have created to support female founders and entrepreneurs in the digital economy in the UK and internationally, supporting the Department’s goals for trade and inward investment.
