Meet the makers

The UK has an exceptional reputation for participation in World and Specialist Expos. As well as founding the first ever World Exhibition in 1851, our contributions to subsequent Expos have been consistently award-winning and the benefits wide-ranging. The UK Pavilion, designed by a dedicated, innovative multi-disciplinary creative team, is the centrepiece of our presence.

The Pavilion’s design and concept interprets the UK’s participation theme of ‘Innovating for a Shared Future’ (the UK’s response to the overall Expo theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ – each Expo has its own distinctive theme), in a way which will create the most original, inspiring and memorable visitor experience possible.

Innovation + creativity

The winning design for the UK Pavilion is being produced by Avantgarde, leading a consortium of globally renowned experts including Es Devlin Studios, Veretec, Atelier One, and Atelier Ten. They explore how we can come together for a shared future and directly linked the concept to the thematic district that the UK Pavilion sits.

From the Latin Ob (towards) and Portus (a port). A seafaring term – inscribing in the language of an ancient trading nation, whose seaports are set to be supplemented with the UK’s first commercial Spaceport by 2021.

Taking inspiration from the route of the word ‘opportunity’, Es Devlin started looking at what it would mean to space travel. She was inspired by the physicist Stephen Hawking’s Breakthrough Message where it invites people worldwide to consider what message we would communicate to express ourselves as a planet should we one day encounter other advanced civilisations in space.
