Why is Digital Health so critical?

The coronavirus pandemic has created challenges for healthcare systems around the world. There are simply too many patients to see, not enough time to see them and too few resources to cope. The pandemic has stretched health systems to their limits, raising important questions such as how to track suspected infection, how to diagnose and treat patients remotely, and how to relieve pressure and free capacity in healthcare settings. 

Digital technologies have been at the heart of the public health response to Covid-19 worldwide, facilitating contact tracing, the roll out of virtual consultations and telemedicine, while AI models have proven their weight in accelerating Covid-drug repurposing and the quest for a vaccine. There is no denying the value that digital technology has had in enabling us to curb the effects of Covid-19, as well as the desire for global collaboration. 

But Digital Health is not just critical in the response to global pandemics.  Digital Health uses advances in computing power and data techniques to make healthcare better, safer, faster, more accurate and reach further. Without it, we simply don’t have the global workforce to cope with the demand, especially with ageing populations, issues around access to care and the growth of non-communicable diseases like diabetes and cancer.
