Northern Powerhouse Virtual FinTech Mission to Australia

The Department for International Trade (DIT) invites businesses from across the Northern Powerhouse (NPH) region to join a virtual trade mission and explore the opportunities in Australia.

The mission is ideal for businesses working in the FinTech sector (including LegalTech and InsurTech) who are wanting to explore opportunities in Australia. We also welcome companies from across the Financial and Professional Services sector who want to gain an understanding of the Australia market.

Planned sessions include information about market opportunities and how to access them, details of the regulatory environment and FinTech ecosystems, sector-specific events, help with practical aspects of doing business in Australia, access to key in-market contacts and sessions to gear up for pitching for business with Australian companies. This pre-mission event (recording available) will prepare you and your business for all these opportunities later in the year.

We are delighted to be collaborating with FinTech North and DIT Australia to deliver this mission.

You will be able to select which events you would like to attend when you register, including those across the wider FinTech Mission Programme.

Why Australia?

  • Australia has a sophisticated financial services sector, boasting a comparatively strong economy and is well positioned as a financial hub in one of the world's fastest growing regions.
  • Australia has a A$9.5 trillion financial sector which equates to almost five times Australia’s GDP.
  • Australia's Consumer Data Right (CDR) regime in the banking sector went live on 1 July 2020 giving consumers greater access to and control over their data as well as boosting competition. This presents a range of opportunities for UK FinTech companies as Australian financial institutions look to evolve their businesses.
  • Australia ranks amongst the top 10 nations for FinTechs with Sydney and Melbourne in the top 20 global FinTech hubs.
  • Australia has well-developed financial markets, including the world’s fifth largest pool of managed funds, ninth largest stock market and tenth largest foreign exchange market. The US$2.2 trillion managed funds sector is underpinned by a mandated retirement savings scheme – called superannuation – that has created the fourth largest pension pool in the world.
  • Australia’s four major banks are among the world’s largest banks by market capitalisation and all rank in the top 25 globally for safest banks. They are also some of the most profitable in the world.
  • Australia is a great launching pad into the Asian market due to proximity, time zones and the high numbers of Asian language speakers in Australia.

UK Australia FinTech Bridge

  • Launched in March 2018, the UK-Australia Fintech Bridge is an agreement between the UK and Australian governments to support FinTech companies in both countries. It promotes collaboration, co-operation and partnerships and facilitates entry for FinTechs into each other’s markets, especially by reducing regulatory barriers and allowing steps towards reciprocity on policy.
  • UK bridge success stories in Australia include: GoCardless, Revolut, Ebury, Crowd2Fund, Delio, DigiMe, FDM, AxeTrading, Global Processing Services, Raising IT, ingage, Recordsure, Bud, eXate, McLEAR, Vermeg.
  • Since the signing of the Bridge, 31 Australian FinTech companies have commenced business in the UK and 31 UK FinTech companies have commenced business in Australia.
