Speakers

Phil Broek MIEx, Market Specialist Advisor – Technology Sector, Department for International Trade SW

Phil Broek has over 35 years of experience in International Trade. A DIT Market Specialist Advisor for the Technology Sector in the South West, Phil provides help, support and services to UK Tech companies looking to grow their business in overseas markets, with services that include strategic advice, market research, trade missions, exhibition support and training. Phil has worked in strategic consulting with some highly innovative, cutting-edge technologies from SME's and Blue Chip companies in a number of emerging markets globally.

A dedicated environmentalist, Phil is particularly passionate about Green-Tech and sustainable environmental solutions and has been invited to present on this subject to various business groups.

 

David Gregory the China Market Business Adviser, for CBBC, focusing on Advanced Manufacturing and Transport.

Before returning to the UK in 2015 David spent almost 17 years based in China and South East Asia. For the majority of that time he worked as a senior executive in large, multi-national companies, in the building material sector. Drawing from his experience, he aims to deliver clear and practical advice to clients wishing to engage with China.

 

Mark Hedley, Director, Knowledge Economy Sector, CBBC 

Mark Hedley is CBBC’s Director for the Knowledge Economy sector, heading up various initiatives to support clients in the areas of tech, innovation and healthcare. Mark has spent over two decades living in an travelling to mainland China, working in a number strategic consulting roles helping Western technology firms to enter the China market. He has significant experience carrying out complex market entry and business development projects on behalf of B2B clients, and has worked with a range of multinational and SME clients across different industry verticals. A fluent Mandarin speaker, Mark holds a Masters in Chinese Business from Sheffield University and MBA from Lancaster University.

 

Matt Walker, Head of International Strategy & Government Relations, Versarien Plc

A graduate of the Government’s Fast Stream programme, Matt has undertaken a number of roles within Government, most notably as the Department for International Trade’s (DIT) Head of the Devolved Administrations, where he was responsible for helping Scottish Development International, Business Wales and Invest Northern Ireland achieve Foreign Direct Investment and Export targets; and also more recently as the Head of the Outward Direct Investment (ODI) programme, where he lead the team which created the new Government ODI Strategy, and which became a DIT priority and policy from April 2018.


From May 2018, Matt went on a secondment to Versarien Plc where he headed up International Strategy and Government Relations, to ensure Versarien was well placed to become a global leader in the Advanced Materials (particularly graphene) sector; whilst also fulfilling the company’s international expansion ambitions to ensure economic benefits of ODI can be repatriated back to the UK. Matt has now taken up this role for Versarien permanently to build on the agreements made in China, whilst also driving the on-going opportunities within Japan, India and the USA. Matt’s most recent success was overseeing the acquisition of Hanwha’s (originally Samsung’s) CVD graphene technology to further Versarien’s graphene production portfolio; and he was instrumental in forming Versarien Korea Ltd as a new overseas subsidiary for the Group.

 

Lily Knott, Clarke Willmott

Lily is the firm’s China Business Operations Manager. She has qualified as a Notary/legal adviser for the provincial government in China before joining Clarke Willmott. She obtained her MS at law at Chongqing Political and Law university and M Phil degree in International law at Birmingham University in 2006 and stayed on following her studies and joined the firm in 2007.

 

Richard Lowe, Bristol & West of England China Bureau and Hewlett Rand Ltd

Richard is Director of Business Initiatives for the Bristol & West of England China Bureau and also owner and Director of Hewlett Rand, a leading training and digital learning consultancy, specialising in bespoke leadership, management sales team development programmes and tailored eLearning solutions for transformation growth with offices in Bristol and Hong Kong.
