The Automotive Sector

The automotive industry is a vital part of the UK economy accounting for more than £82 billion turnover and £20.2 billion value added. With some 186,000 people employed directly in manufacturing and in excess of 856,000 across the wider automotive industry, it accounts for 12.0% of total UK export of goods and invests £3.65 billion each year in automotive R&D.

The UK has world class capabilities in the areas of low carbon technologies, connected and autonomous vehicles, lightweight materials, motorsport and niche low-volume vehicle makers (including buses).  Currently the UK has a £4 billion per annum opportunity for tier one supplier business and £2 billion for upstream suppliers.

The current interests of the low carbon vehicle technology-developer community are broadening in scope. Progress with technology and market development is simultaneously creating new product and service needs for the sector. There is also the concurrent development of intelligent, connected and autonomous vehicles to consider.

This is a period of major disruption for the global motor industry, and disruption brings with it many new opportunities for the design, development, testing, validation and commercial introduction of new technologies. The LCV/CAM event is designed to explore these opportunities. It also helps broker new (as well as ongoing) contacts between organisations that help ensure a competitive position for the motor industry in the UK over the next few decades.
