Workshops

Biofuels and Biogas

Workshop as part of the UK’s clean growth strategy, which sets out how the UK will grow its economy whilst cutting greenhouse gas emissions by exploring new and innovative ways to manage emission from landfill. Whilst it is also UK’s intention for almost every car and van on the road to be a zero emission vehicle by 2050, it recognises that liquid fuels will continue to be required in the long term, in areas such as aviation and heavy goods transport. On the other hand, Brazil is one of the world leaders on biofuels technology and production: first and second generation ethanol/biodiesel is key to Brazil’s target to reduce carbon emission by 37% before 2025 and 43% by 2030. Brazil is currently developing Renovabio, which aims at ratifying industry and government policies to set environmental, economic and financial stable scenarios for the biofuels sector. This workshop will share UK and Brazil’s regulatory and technological developments in generating energy from landfill, and development on biodiesel production, as well as carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology to reduce carbon emission from biomass.

Electric Networks Innovation

Brazil needs to meet future energy needs from a wider range of renewable technologies and manage its power network effectively to integrate these technologies. To absorb intermittent generation and integrate renewables onto its electricity grid, a wider range of technologies – such as battery storage and smart grids - will need to be utilised and deployed at scale. The workshop will explore smart grid and energy storage technologies under development in the UK, which may present suitable solutions to Brazil’s challenges.

Developing the natural gas market is a priority of the Brazilian government.  This workshop aims to debate the future of the gas market in Brazil and the next steps to develop it.  The UK gas market has evolved over the last 35 years from a monopoly to a fully liberalised environment. The session will share UK’s experience, including an introduction of the legal framework, which saw the separation of ownership and transport of the industry, ownership of assets, and the introduction of supply competition, regulation and oversight of the onshore transportation and transmission system. It will explore how UK’s regulatory framework and experience can contribute to the development of the sector in Brazil.

The workshop’s main goal is to assess the country's potential to the development of this sector and opportunities, taking advantage of its enormous potential, as well as Brazil’s world leading expertise in offshore markets. Additionally, the workshop aims to highlight that the UK’s experience on technology and regulation and share experiences on how the country has developed the largest offshore wind capacity in the world. At the end of 2018, the UK accounted for 48% of Europe’s installed offshore wind capacity and, by 2030, the UK Government strategy intent to guarantee that one third of the country’s power will be generate by Offshore Wind farms.
