Case Study – UK Engagement in Reconstruction Efforts in Peru following the El Niño Catastrophe

The UK Delivery Team (UKDT) of Mace, Arup and Gleeds is working in partnership with the Department of International Trade to deliver the reconstruction of vital schools, health facilities and flood protection in Peru following the 2017 El Niño catastrophe which affected 1.1 million people and left 178,000 homeless.

To guard against future disaster and floods, the UKDT is implementing world-leading flood mitigation and prevention solutions through the integration of enhanced early warning systems, new urban drainage systems, and the reforestation and afforestation of 51,000 hectares. The programme of works covers 17 river basins, 5 gullies and 7 drainage systems across 7 regions to enhance Peru’s climate resilience for many years to come, as well as deploying international standards to deliver 74 schools and 15 health facilities over an accelerated timeframe.
