Department for Business and Trade

The UK’s Department for Business and Trade (DBT) helps businesses export, drives inward and outward investment, negotiates market access and trade deals, and champions free trade. Northern Powerhouse

The Northern Powerhouse is the UK government’s vision for a super-connected, globally competitive northern economy with a flourishing private sector and highly skilled population ready to take its place on the world stage. The Northern Powerhouse has one of the largest clusters of orthopaedic, medical device and surgical companies in the UK. These clusters are home to medical manufacturing and device companies and expertise available across orthopaedic devices, wound care, instruments and laboratory equipment. In addition, profound expertise in Precision Medicine and Healthy Ageing is one of the strong areas within the North of England. This is underpinned by world leading clinical trials infrastructure, health economics and health informatics and eHealth. It is also home to the N8 research partnership, which includes the Universities of Durham, Newcastle, York, Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool and Lancaster coming together to promote deeper collaboration between universities, business and society, establish innovative research capabilities, programmes of national and international reputation and to drive economic growth by generating income, supporting jobs and new businesses.

Midlands Region

Businesses from across the Healthcare and Life Sciences sector in the UK are delivering world-leading products and services globally. The Midlands region is home to one of the most important Life Sciences ecosystems in the UK with more than 1,200 life science companies, 33,000 highly skilled jobs and the second largest concentration of MedTech companies in the UK based in the region. With a diverse population of over 10 million citizens, the Midlands region in the UK makes the ideal test bed for global health and multimorbidity interventions. It is also a major centre for clinical research, which stems from its high number of world-class universities, research centres and incubators. Invest Northern Ireland (Invest NI) is Northern Ireland's regional economic development agency. Our role is to grow the local economy by helping new and existing businesses compete internationally and attracting new investment to Northern Ireland. With our presence in the India, Middle East, and Africa region, our offices help Northern Ireland companies increase exports, develop international collaborations, and seek new investment.
