Ian McLaren MBE

Marine Sector Specialist Great South West - Department for International Trade South West

Ian has been involved with Marine since leaving school in 1975 when he joined the Royal Navy. After 25 years of Active Service covering the Falklands War and the First Gulf War, Ian was awarded his MBE by Her Majesty in 1996 Birthday Honours List after being in action in Bosnia with the Aircraft Carrier HMS Illustrious.  Ian retired from the RN in early 2000 and since then has been active in the Marine Sector from Ship Building to Fishery Protection and Vessel Technology.  Marine EV is one of Ian’s new passions where the Technology can contribute significantly to decarbonizing the Maritime Space.

Rachel Chambers

Chief Operating Officer, DER Industrialisation Centre - Newcastle University

Rachel has extensive experience of working at board level within a range of sectors/markets, including automotive, manufacturing and technology/distribution etc, working across all sizes of organisation from large corporates, to SMEs and has also both operated in and set up a business.  Rachel’s experience spans across working with industry, regional and national government bodies, academia and RTO’s to develop innovative technologies, processes and products.  Rachel has also set up the Centre of Excellence for Advanced Manufacturing (CESAM), an innovation centre in the North East, and is the Chief Operating Officer for the Driving the Electric Revolution Industrialisation Centre North East which supports industry to develop and scale-up new power electronics machines and drives technologies and manufacturing processes.  Rachel left her global role to focus on bringing up her 2 children which has enabled her to focus on driving impact in the UK, focusing on net zero and developing supply chains for the future of electrification.

Driving the Electric Revolution Industrialisation Centres

The Driving the Electric Revolution Industrialisation Centres (DER-IC) accelerates power electronics, machines and drives (PEMD) supply chain capability and growth. It is a UK wide project providing PEMD solutions for the global market. The centres were set up by UK Research and Innovation in 2020 as part of the Driving the Electric Revolution Challenge.  Specifically within the marine and shipbuilding sector, which is rapidly expanding, our DER Industrialisation Centres and partners are pooling expertise across the end to end supply chain and supporting innovation in this sector which will provide significant performance gains, reduce operating costs and emissions.

This includes participation in multiple projects within the EU’s Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe programmes in thematic areas such as: EU Green Deal; Copernicus Earth Observation; Nature Based Solutions; Resilient and Sustainable Infrastructure; Data Driven Decision-Making. In the UK, Laurence is active in projects and concepts supporting the UK’s changing societal needs in areas such as: The Clean Maritime Plan; Digital & Green Skills; Social Value; Societal & Community He has a particular interest in aligning governance and operational delivery at the intersection and boundaries between organisations whether public, private, voluntary and community, saying that they need to come together to understand, manage and meet their shared safety, security, resilience and sustainability needs. Laurence is an accomplished public speaker and has numerous published works to his name.

Simon Chelton was a logistics officer in the Royal Navy for over 30 years, serving in ships and submarines and later working in staff and senior leadership education roles.  He also learned Japanese, and was Defence Attaché in Tokyo from 2003 to 2007.  After 3 years as a Vice President for Japanese strategy in BAE Systems he created a consultancy in 2012 that specialises in promoting defence business, principally between Japan and the UK.  The business has had a number of major corporate Japanese clients.  Simon is also an Associate of a number of thinktanks, including RUSI in London, the International Security Industry Council of Japan, and SAGE International Australia.

Dave Cockwell is a boat builder through and through. A skilled shipwright, he has extensive experience of every type of hull construction and joinery, and is driven by his quest to resolve the next design challenge, however insurmountable it may seem. He is also keen to embrace new technology and the most up-to-date build techniques. 

Cockwells design and custom-build superyacht tenders, motor yachts and commercial craft.

Sarah Fear

Project and Knowledge Exchange Manager - The University of Plymouth

Sarah is an experienced Project manager with over 20 years of knowledge in funding programmes and the successful delivery of multi million pound projects with many partners. As part of the Sustainable Earth Institute she leads on Environmental Intelligence and Sensors, manages two external funded projects (Impact Lab and MeLL) and also leads on Clean Maritime.

The University of Plymouth has several activities around Electrification of Vessels, including the work in partnerships with Plymouth Boat Trip’s e-Voyager and the Mount Batten Ferry e-Link. Funding was made available for the refits to full electric and supporting academic expertise to assist the transition and regulatory aspects. We are currently delivering a project for the infrastructure to support this onward growth in the sector and need to also consider our own fleet of vessels and USV’s.
